Recently a businessman set up a firm in Nairobi and moved into a serviced office premises paying between Sh160,000 and Sh200,000 a month.

He then decided to rent his own premises with four employees for the core business.

The businessman had to pay for rent, security, Internet, and a cleaner who was also the messenger.

He had to hire an administrator, pay for utilities such as telephone, water and electricity and CCTV surveillance.

When he budgeted for the non-core staff, that required bigger premises, his monthly bill came to about Sh900,000.

That is a familiar story to Alex Andrewes, a Briton who owns and has been running Westlands-based Eden Square Business Centre (ESBC) which offers serviced and virtual office premises at Eden Square building.
